Workshop: Reading as a Factor of Multidimensional Community Development

On November 15, 2024, the workshop "Reading as a Factor of Multidimensional Community Development" will be held, led by Maria Deskur and Katarzyna Konopka from the Universal Reading Foundation. The event is organized by the Provincial Public Library and the Cultural Animation Center in Poznań.

The Universal Reading Foundation was established in 2018 and aims to raise the level of reading in Poland. FPC became the first Polish organization to be awarded the Library of Congress Literacy Award 2024. The award is an expression of recognition of the organization's achievements in the field of reading promotion, development of innovative methods and practices in this field.

Recipients: The training is addressed to directors and directors and librarians from public and school libraries in Greater Poland.

During the meeting of the Universal Reading Foundation, he will talk about his activities and ongoing projects, seeking answers to the following questions together with the participants:

  • Why is the conversation about promoting reading marginalized and how can we change that?
  • How to change the narratives around reading to change attitudes and behaviors towards promoting reading?
  • What could a strategy for promoting reading look like with the library as the epicenter of an effective network of influence?

The workshops will be led by:

Maria Deskur – publisher, expert in popularizing reading, practitioner of collective impact. Graduate of Romance studies at the Jagiellonian University, Literature at the Sorbonne and Communication at the Université Lumière. Co-founder of the Muchomor publishing house, long-time managing director of Książek Egmontu and Burda, co-founder and president of the Powszechnego Czytania Foundation, author of the guide to popularizing reading "Supermoc książki", co-author of the guide "#TataAlsoReads" and "Reading School", co-founder of the Reading Poland Coalition, Ashoka Fellow.

Catherine Konopka – publisher, marketer, expert in popularizing reading, graduate of journalism, publisher, marketer. She worked in the marketing departments of Znak and Egmont publishing houses. For several years she supported Polonia by working at the Consulate General in New York. As a publisher, she was responsible for children's books at the Słowne publishing house. Member of the Board and project manager of the Powszechnego Czytania Foundation.
