Reading for a Better World – A Conversation at the House of Books in Poznan

Can reading change the world? At the Universal Reading Foundation, we believe it can.

That’s why on March 12 we will take part in a conversation at the House of Books in Poznań about why literature remains one of the most important tools for building a more conscious and equitable society.

The evening, organized by the House of Books Foundation, will begin with the opening of an exhibition of memorabilia from the former House of Books—a place that for years was an important point on Poznań’s cultural map. The collected archives, materials discovered during the building’s revitalization, and artistic collages by Monika Lisiecka will recall the history of this place and the people who helped create it.

Afterward, we invite you to the panel discussion “The House of Books as an idea and a place that shapes the future: Reading for a Better World.” Together with our exceptional guests—Joanna Olech, Justyna Sobolewska, Tomasz Stawiszyński, and Prof. Przemysław Czapliński—we will talk about the role of literature in the contemporary world: how reading fosters empathy, broadens horizons, and can help equalize opportunities. The conversation will be moderated by Maria Deskur, President of the Universal Reading Foundation.

The event is part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the House of Books and serves as a symbolic prologue to the Poznan Book Fair.

We invite everyone who feels close to the idea of universal reading to join the conversation, listen, and help write the next chapters of this story together.
