In May 2026, founding workshops were held at the Palace of the Republic in Warsaw European Union Coalition for Reading<\/strong> (EU Literacy Coalition) co-organized by the Universal Reading Foundation as the leader of the European program #ReadForReal #CzytajSerio.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the competence crisis (including the reading crisis) among Europeans, Brussels introduced the "Union of Skills" Strategy\u201e<\/strong>, one of whose main goals is to improve the reading skills of Europeans. The creation of the European Reading Coalition is part of the implementation of the strategy. <\/strong><\/p>\n

It was an honor for me to be invited to join the steering group. The Universal Reading Foundation joined EURead (European Association of Reading Promotion Organizations), FELA (Federation of European Literacy Associations), EBLIDA (European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations), the University of Urbino, and the European STEM Coalition. Preparatory work began in January <\/em>\u2013 says Maria Deskur, president of FPC.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representatives from various fields and sectors participated in the workshops. In addition to education and culture, there were also participants from psychology and health, employment, digital technologies, management, and science.,
from non-governmental organizations, business and the public sector.<\/p>\n

The table work covered various topics, from why and how to work cross-sectorally, through the question of the challenge of reading in the digital age; how to support citizens' reading competences,
to mapping who can influence all of this.<\/p>\n

The content has been developed which will be the basis for formulating the Coalition's founding document, announced as the "Warsaw Memorandum".<\/strong> A conference is planned for September
in Brussels, which is to be the official moment of inauguration of the Coalition.<\/p>\n

The discussions were very interesting thanks to the professionalism and diversity of the participants. However, the value of such a Coalition will, of course, stem from its long-term effectiveness, and that will take time.
